THREE INDEPENDENT COURSES FORM THIS WORKSHOP. YOU CAN ATTEND ONE, TWO OR ALL OF THEM
HERE YOU WILL FIND ACCURATE DETAILS OF PRACTICAL INTEREST ABOUT THE WORKSHOP.
WHAT IS THE CORE OF THE COURSES?
The essence of the workshop is SURGICAL ANATOMY. Not anatomy, nor surgical techniques. But what surgical anatomy is? The techniques that give us the opportunity to turn a map (anatomy) on to a road book and therefore allow us to answer, at all times, the three main questions related to safety during a surgical procedure:
-What is that?
-Where is it?
-Wich way?
HOW ARE WE DOING IT?
Ascending three steps:
-Review of pelvic anatomy: theoretical lecture
-Learning and understanding what is surgical anatomy, and thus constructing our road book through female pelvis: theoretical lecture
-Doing it in the dissection room: practical session hands on in unembalmed female cadavers, with just two attendants for each corpse.
-As an additional help, there will be previously dissected fresh pieces for consult at any moment during practice
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN ATTEND THE COURSES?
We are sorry, but up to twelve. As you can understand, no extension is possible
WHERE WILL THIS OCCUR?
In the Anatomy Department, both classrooms and dissection room, of the School of Medicine of the University of Barcelona
LOCATION OF THE EVENT?
Faculty of Medicine. University of Barcelona

WHEN WILL THIS OCCUR?
On March 2012, in two consecutive days for three different workshops:
-9th Friday for the pelvic course
-10th Saturday morning for the pelvic floor course
-10th Saturday afternoon for the breast course
PARTICULARITIES FOR EACH COURSE
PELVIC COURSE
The main aim is to achieve a complete dissection of the pelvic and abdominal retroperitoneum without damaging any anatomical structure, according to the following schedule:
8.15-8.30: Welcome and introduction
8.30-9.00: Review of pelvic anatomy
9.00-10.00: Learning and understanding what is surgical anatomy
10-10.30: Coffee break
10.30-13.00: Hands on in the dissection room
13.00-15.00: Lunch and Rest (siesta is optional)
15.00-19.00: Hands on in the dissection room
Hands-on will start by access to the abdominal cavity, discussing the safest entry points, and inspection of the whole abdominal cavity
Dissection of the following areas must be made for each attendant:
Anterior pelvic spaces and fossae (the following structures must be identified: Retzius Space with endopelvic fascia and arcus tendineum, elevator ani and internal obturator mussels, obturator fossa with vessels and nerves)
Parametrium Area (the following structures must be identified: Terminal branches of the hypogastric artery as the uterine artery, vesical artery and umbilical artery)
Posterior pelvic spaces and fossae (the following structures must be identified: sacral promontory area including aortic and cava bifurcation and hypogastric plexus; great pelvic vessels; hypogastric nerve; sciatic nerve and its origin; recto-vaginal septum)
Paraortic space (the following structures must be identified: Aorta artery and cava vein and its branches until renal vessels, paying special attention to identify ovarian vessels)
In all the previous areas the ureter must be always localized and “under control”
21.00: Dinner all together and farewell
PELVIC FLOOR COURSE
In this course we want to achieve a complete dissection of the pelvic floor spaces with the following schedule:
8.15-8.30: Welcome and introduction
8.30-9.00: Review of pelvic floor anatomy
9.00-9.30: Learning and understanding what is surgical anatomy
9.30-10.00: Coffee break
10.00-13.00: Hands on in the dissection room
Hands-on will include the following items:
-Access to the vesico-vaginal space
-Identification of the pelvic fascia and elevator insertions, the obturator space, the sciatic spine and the retropubic-prevesical (Retzius) space
-Access to the recto-vaginal space, and identification of the pelvic fascia and elevator insertions, obturator space and sciatic spine
-Special attention will be paid to the main points about surgical procedures to correct pelvic floor dysfunctions, with or without prosthetic material, even if its use is not the essential target of the workshop
-At the end, open dissection to access Retzius space and to evaluate the main points of the accomplished work
BREAST COURSE
In this course we want to achieve a complete dissection of the breast and axillary spaces with the following schedule:
15-15.15: Welcome and introduction
15.15-15.30: Review of breast and axilla anatomy
15.30-16: Learning and understanding what is surgical anatomy
16-19: Hands on in the dissection room
Hands-on will include the following items:
Dissection of breast and chest wall
Dissection of axillary space identifying the following structures: axillary and subscapular vessels, axillary aspect of the subscapular, serratum and pectoral minor mussels, long thoracic and major dorsal nerves and identifying the brachial plexus.
SOME ADDITIONAL ITEMS
LANGUAGE: English. Attendants can get help in some other languages (Spanish, French, Italian and Catalan for sure) but no on line translation is possible
ACCOMODATION: The organization can help attendants in hotel booking
MEALS: coffee-break is included in the registration fee for any course. Lunch and dinner is included in the Pelvic anatomy course.
On line registration will be available from 20-11-2011
